ONETWOONETHREE

IN '1 2 1 3' exactly the same principles are involved as in 'Oddseven, except that the scale used is the chromatic scale starting and finishing on concert C. This scale has 13 notes in it (including top and bottom C) and consequently it is played in measures of 13 beats.

C C# D D# E F F# G G# A A# B C
B A# A G# G F# F E D# D C# C C#
D D# etc...

It takes 12 full cycles to come back to a C on the first beat of a measure.

II THE entries are staggered in the same way as in 'Oddseven' and the sustained note at the end of the full sequence of 12 cycles will be C sharp. A second group of 13 people would enter, as the second group in 'Oddseven' does, on the 2nd beat of the first person in group 1's re-entry for their 2nd sequence, ie while they are playing C sharp.

PERSON 1: GROUP 1: C C# D D# E ...
PERSON 1: GROUP 2:   C C# D D# E...

The second group enter in exactly the same way as the first group did, each person taking their cue from the person preceding them and entering after 13 beats (on the 14th beat).

SUGGESTIONS FOR ARRANGEMENTS

Any percussion players can accompany these pieces with a rhythmic backing. A rhythm section accompanying 'Oddseven' should count in 8, and for '1 2 1 3' the count should be 13. We have performed 'Oddseven' with a rhythm section of 8 people playing 'Numbers' behind it. Obviously the scales of C major and C chromatic are just two of many that could be arranged in this way. Any pattern of notes, in fact, could be used. Bear in mind that, in order to exhaust all the harmonic possibilities of any given pattern of notes, you need the same number of people playing as there are pitches in the pattern you have chosen. If you have a group of 5 people, why not choose one of the pentatonic scales? If you have 4 people, try arpeggiating a four note chord such as C7 (C E G B flat).

When the group is proficient at playing the given sequences, people can use the gap between playing their sustained note and coming in with their next re-entry as a space for improvisation.
