This is a simple rhythmic motif that is spoken to begin with and later transferred on to instruments. This piece helps to develop accuracy of tempo at high speeds.

I SAY the phrase in unison as slowly as necessary, until everyone is familiar with it.
II SIT in a circle and take it in turns to say the motif in strict time, each person following directly on from the one before. The first person sets the tempo, which should be maintained throughout.
III NEXT, again in turn, each person attempts to say the motif as fast as possible for them. It is important to start the motif immediately the preceding person has finished, notwithstanding any differences in speed.
IV NOW everyone says the motif together, still attempting to say it as fast as possible. Here is a space to work at the speed of the phrase, practising it, breaking it down if necessary . until each person can say the phrase fluently at their top speed. Everyone will be going at different tempos here, so be careful not to lose your place.
V TRANSFER the phrase onto instruments (with vocalists staying on voices). Keep it simple - the first 12 3 4 5 played on one note, and choose another note for the 'ands'. For pitched instruments this note could be a fourth apart, or drummers can play the 1 2 3 4 5 with both hands together, with the rest of the motif played on a cymbal. Go through a similar procedure up to step IV.

It helps to keep your phrase steady if you tap a slow 4 beneath it (steps I and II).

D also helps to develop fluency at high speed and incorporates solos.
